Parakeets
"Parakeet Facts"
Parakeets, or Budgies as they are lovingly known, have the distinction of
heading the list for the most species of all bird life.
With hundreds of different kinds of
Budgies, too many to mention
here, we will endeavor to introduce this species to you including their
habits, diet, and general disposition.
To begin with, the word parakeet literally means “long tail.” Therefore,
you will observe that most parakeets can range from 7 inches to 18
inches in length.
They usually have small bodies and long tail feathers that are tapered.
They come in a variety of colors as well. Upon acquiring a new Parakeet,
you may notice he is a bit afraid of you. |

Using a soothing voice and moving ever so slowly while talking to the keet will
reassure him that everything is all right.
Eventually, with consistent training,
patience, and socialization they will learn to trust you and accept you are
their keeper.
Experts suggest that parakeets have the ability to learn to talk mostly from women
and children. This is due to the fact they can mimic the pitch of their voices
more easily. They can be taught to jump from hand to hand, kiss, and perform
acts such as climb ladders or ring bells that are placed in their cage. Training
is an essential part of keeping your keet happy and healthy, as well as abiding
by your rules of engagement.
Parakeets make wonderful companions. Owners have commented that keets are known
to chirp excitedly when you return home from work; they tend to stay close to
the member of the family they have bonded with; they seem to try and grab your
attention as much as possible; and love to cuddle and be held.
Parakeets make great pets because they are not only friendly but communicate
their excitement when you are around. Their lifespan is approximately 15 years
or more, and they can be easily cared for. In addition, the cages are relatively
inexpensive (although a stainless steel cage is preferred for its durability);
they eat in small increments; and they also have the ability to de-stress you
after a long day’s work.
They love to exercise out of their cages, but they should also be watched
carefully as there are many items in the home that can cause problems for them.
Moreover, there are a few things to know about parakeets that can assist you in
training them and offering a happy and contented environment.
Cuttlebones as well as chewable toys are essential to keep their beaks trimmed.
Their beak grows three inches every year. They enjoy toys of all kinds, however,
keep them small and alternate the type frequently.
Whether you decide to add a
bathing dish in their cage or use a mist spray, keets love this activity and it
helps keep them clean. Diet is essential. Portion control and foods that are
packed with energy are recommended.
Add a variety of perches in their cage made mostly of wood.
Finally, enjoy your parakeet and bestow upon him or her as much love and
attention as possible. They will not only reciprocate, but provide so much
enjoyment for you and your family in return. |
