Hi Kristen,

You're certainly right about the first aid kit. I did a post just before this one about 5 things we all should HAVE: ://www.birdtricks.com/blog/5-things-every-parrot-owner-should-have/. It includes a the kit. I understand the feelings of guilt, but don't beat yourself up over mistakes. If your bird has forgiven you that's all that matters. We do the best we can.

Having an emergency kit is also a must. I didn't use mine for 2 years until one day while politely trimming my Cockatoo's wing, I hit a blood feather. Ooops my bad and I'm glad she is forgiving of me. Especially the toweling part. But the materials inside helped me to remove the bad feather and stop the blood.

Wish they had a material for owners guilt though.

Hi Mister Sam,
My goffins cockatoo also has a quick that expends all the way down the nail so I file her nails to avoid bleeding and pain for her. I'm not a huge fan of sand paper on the perches because it is an unnatural surface for birds and it irritates some of my birds' feet, but it does keep the nails down. Same premise as the filing.
