GOOD MORNING,

I HAD THE MOST AMAZING ENCOUNTER WITH MUFFETT YESTERDAY. I HAD MY HAND IN THE CAGE TO FILL HIS FOOD DISH AND THE OTHER HAND WAS ON THE CAGE DOOR.
HE HAS NEVER BITTEN ME SINCE HE HAS LIVED WITH ME NOW SINCE NOVEMBER 2009.

HE CAME TO MY HAND AT THE DOOR SNUGGLED HIS HEAD AND THEN WIGGLED HIS BODY INTO THE PALM OF MY HAND, OBVIOUSLY WANTING TO BE CUDDLED.

IT WAS ONE OF THE MUST WONDERFUL MOMENTS IN MY LIFE.

MUFFETT ACTUALLY STILL BITES HIS PREVIOUS OWNER WHEN SHE VISITS US. HE HAS ALWAYS DONE SO AND OFTEN DRAWS BLOOD.

RHONA

Congratulations! Keep up the good work :-)

Awwwww…sooo cute!!! I would love for Luna(fischers lovebird) to do that with me!! I’m working on it!! hahaha

Tracy  09/14/2010 5:43 pm

Congrats Rhona, its a wonderful feeling, my Frankie, a 2yr old sunconure, is a snuggle bug. He is always crawling into our hands to sleep or down our shirt to cuddle even closer. Quite often he will even lie on his back for a tummy rub or extend his wings to be rub under them.

Just wait till you teach him to say “love you”. Frankie says I love you every morning when he is woken and every night when he gives us our kisses good night..

Enjoy the love that only a companion bird can give

Tracy

Do you guys have anything on molting? Our sun conure is about 8 month old and has become very nippy. He was biting less at first the more we interacted with him, but all that work seems to have gone away when his molting increased. He is a very friendly bird who loves people.

Ms Mary  09/14/2010 11:29 pm

love all the info. you share with us bird people
I could really use something to help make my sun conure less vocal.
okay, tell it like it is right – LOUD.
our feathered friend is about 2years old and does not speak a single word
but understands questions and ‘will’ nod yes accodingly to key questions
at the same time will ‘not’ nod as a way to say no
please share a tip or two to turn the volume down
Thx

Hi,Chet
I read all the comments from people who responded to your ‘Better Bird’ Program, and am really
envious of the way they have bonded with their birds! I wrote you about my miniature green cheeked conure,Dino, and his habit of biting and screeching.I would love to be able to cuddle him ,and he does occasionally allow me to scratch his head.Unfortunately, though, it is not always possible to give him all the the attention that he seem to crave, and he has become very bored ,frustratedand aggressive as a result! He has lots of toys, and I try hard to bond with him,but he just doesn’t seem to trust me.

Hey Chet !

I just wanted to say thank you for this amazing video!!!Your videos are so helpful for me !!
You are doing such an amazing job ! I would not know what to do with my 2 parrots if it weren’t for you … :D

Could you please try to make some more videos about earning your birds trust? I have 2 male cockatiels, the 1 is very social, loving and playful..But the other is completely the opposite ! He is always afraid of everything, very scared all the time, even inside his cage he doesn’t want to come to me to feed him with a special treat..I just don’t know what to do to face that !! Please help :P
Thank you so much again!

Would this blueprint work on a budgie?

george  09/15/2010 9:18 am

how come it’s no sound when i play your artical.

BillieJo  09/15/2010 3:27 pm

I think your training technique’s and all are just great. But I am unable to afford the video’s you put out. I enjoy everything I am able to tho.

Ellen Rosenthal  09/15/2010 3:36 pm

Can these techniques be used with a parakeet? It seems all of your advice is geared toward larger birds. Even though our bird is quite tame, he will never let us hold him or pet him. That’s where he draws the line and I’d really like to be able to pet him.

Diana  09/15/2010 4:38 pm

Chet – I love your understanding of ‘bird psychology’ and your ability to explain your techniques in logical, layman terms. Diana

great work chet,
but i think the dvd’s are expensive, probably worth it the money,
but i cant afford them, thx paul.

Ive so far gotten to the phase of Edward letting me get close to him (lovebird). after a few weeks now, i take small portions of millet spray that a peel off the stem and he’ll eat it out of my hands. But i cant touch him. Hell even come right up to me and not be hesitant any more. And he’ll even push at my arm if we’re both on my bed and i stopped handing him seeds and am watching TV or something, he’ll “nibble” (not bite, its more like nudging) my arm till i give him some.

But he wont let me touch him!!! GAH! Ill try a technique to help move that along. Ive had Edward for 3 months now, and im still upset about what the store did to his wings but he seems fine, so i hope that hasnt made him afraid of people.

Ammar  09/16/2010 12:24 pm

Dear Chet and Birdtrix,
Although I love Macaws, Cockatoos, Amazons and African Greys (particularly), I cant have those as BABY African Greys cost 1500Dirhams (the currency here in Dubai, UAE) Amacaw costs 10,000.
So, smaller birds like budgies, cockatiels, Indian Ringneck and Conures are my limits! :’(
But, size doesn’t matter to me.
So far I’ve already had 2 cockatiels and and an Indian Ringneck, who by the way, was amazingly tame.
Currently I am birdless and hope to get one soon.
According to sociality skills, can U please tell me which one of the above the mentioned 4 are the best and if so, how many will go gud?
I SEEK PROFESSIONAL ADVICE.

PLEASE REPLY!!! ;)

Cameran  09/16/2010 10:11 pm

Dear Chet,
I have a little blue parakeet(my first bird) and he might go onto my finger away from his cage, but he won’t let me touch him. When he is on or near his cage he will bite me (very hard) if I even try to come near. Please help!

Bettie  09/17/2010 4:30 am

Thanks so much Chet for the info. I am going to get a Blue Crown Conure and I am pretty sure this is going to help!

Mariah Haskell  09/27/2010 7:15 pm

Thank you for the information … it has blown me away. Paulie, my Senegal parrot gets a bit “pissy” and I don’t know when he will lunge to bite so currently I am loving him through the cage. He will put his head down and let me rub all I want. Is it me that is afraid?

khulood  10/03/2010 6:47 am

my bird canary is so sweet & sings with me ..
but when ever i want to get closer to her or to be friendly. she always bites me. even when i open up the cage for the seeds.
The probelm is the hand..
yes…if she sees the hands or finger she goes crazy????
what to do ..please help…

Thanks,,

Hello i have a bare eyed cockatoo called blade he well i assume hes a he. my problem is he will not come close to me when i feed him or get close to him he moves to the rear of his cage when ive caught him in the past he is ok with me as long as im holding him he doesnt bite me at all i can even put the aviator harness on him with no problems but as soon as i let hi go he runs away. he always goes to my girlfriend my sister mum & niece but not me i purchased you parrot training book & dvd but i think it will only help when i can get him to stay with me without me holding him. its so frustrating if i could overcome this i could use you book/dvd’s to get closer to him. i hope you can give me some surrgestions as i would love to take him everywhere with me im a lorry driver by trade & would love him to come to work but have had to only work days as i dont want to & cannot leave him for to long although he has a wide range of toys & i always leave music on for him PLEASE help Thank you for your time Darren & Blade
