Moving To Florida!

Rose Breasted Cockatoo and African Grey

While Jamie and Dave are freeflying with their students in Moab, Utah, I am packing up my apartment so I can hitch a ride to Orlando with them on their way back.  They are going to be on the road for two years starting in December, and I am going to be staying at their house while they’re gone.  This is going to be the start of some big changes for me and the flock.

For the past five years, following my divorce, I have been living in a very small apartment – one small bedroom, a bath, and a living room/dining room/kitchen combo, about 550 sq. ft of space.  Joining me was my 14 year old cat, Chaz, (who just recently died from complications following minor dental surgery-I am heart sick over his loss), and my five parrots.

I had been looking for a larger place in November of 2008, just about when retailers were starting to panic about the downturn in the economy, and my position at my job was cut.  Since taking on more expense, including the military macaw that I was preparing to rehome, was no longer feasible or practical when I had no income, I decided to stay put.  I found another job at a  lower rate of pay and felt lucky to have a job at all.

Several months ago, Jamie emailed me about their plans and asked me if I was interested in moving to Orlando.  I thought about it for a couple of days, and decided it was the perfect opportunity to make some much needed changes.  With a bird room and outdoor aviaries at my disposal for two years, not to mention a LOT more space, I will be able to work with my birds in ways that have been impossible over the past five years.  Most importantly, I will be able to separate them and dote on them individually without another species being nearby to voice their objections.  The cockatoos have no patience for the wants of the smaller birds.  The smaller birds think that the cockatoos are too needy.  They don’t see eye to eye on many issues.

So I’m packing, packing, packing – throwing away anything that is not absolutely necessary or that has no serious sentimental value.  I have moved enough times to know that I have three stages in my packing process.  I am currently in stage 2.  Stage 1 is the when I throw out all of the things that I should never have been keeping in the first place.  This is the stage that has me wondering why I have been saving that box of unused checks for a bank account that was closed over ten years ago.  In stage 2, I separate the absolutely must keep items from  the I kinda still want this pile.  A lot of talking to myself goes on in this stage.  Stage 3 is when the actual packing takes place.  It is also when I inevitably throw out everything in the I kinda still want this pile that I didn’t have the courage to throw out in stage 2.

I suspect that in the end, I will be taking many more birds belongings than human ones.  It is hard to imagine how these tiny little creatures have accumulated so much.  I’m wondering if they have been ordering things on line while I’m at work.  I am getting so excited for moving day!

Freeflying Here in Moab, Utah

Blue throated macaw

Our first day out here in Moab, Utah was super windy! We had guests Connie and Vic with their blue throated macaw, Tika (who is on a harness in this photo above) and the only bird that got to fly in the 35mph winds at Fisher Towers was our galah, Bandit.

He had a pretty good time but it was A LOT of work to fight against that wind! We stayed out a little while and showed Connie and Vic the sites, took some video time lapses of the area so the whole day didn’t go to waste since we chose not to fly any of the other birds. The gusts were up to 45 mph and it was just way too much for everyone’s first day out!

However, the rest of the week is supposed to be great and more friends will be joining us this Wednesday with their own freeflight birds as well, so many more birds in the air to see and anyone is still welcome to join us and watch the birds fly outside!

We will be spending our first few days at Fisher Towers so hopefully we see you there, and if we do, plan on seeing yourself possibly on the blog! ;)

Camelot Macaws, Blue Throated Macaw

Dave and I are headed to Moab, Utah this month to meet up with our newest Freestyle Flyer Students (and old ones, too!) and have a great time flying our birds together outside in the gorgeous terrain Moab has to offer.

Our last few trips to freefly have been in Waynesboro, VA as well as Page, AZ and Sedona, AZ. But based on where our newest students are, we decided Moab would be perfect for this trip. And since some of you were able to make it out last time we went to Moab, we figured we’d extend the invitation yet again…

We will be in Moab from October 3-16, so if you would like to come out any of those days and join us in watching our flock fly, please get in touch with us here on the blog in a comment and we will let you know the details. It’d best if you leave an email address (as our schedule will change based on weather conditions) so I can keep you personally updated with where to meet up with us!

If you’d like to join us, just leave a comment with how to get in touch with you and hopefully we will see you in the great outdoors of Moab, along with our flock that are eager to meet and show off for you! :)

Another Parrot Saved!

Yes, this is the SAME Amazon Parrot we got over 60 days ago, that was weighing a whopping 580 grams, severely obese, malnourished, sleep deprived, aggressive, and the list goes on…

Can you believe that the bird in the photo above is that same bird? I know I can’t!

We took his flight training to a new level and created Storm into a free flighted parrot. He is now ascending with no problem, has more energy in flight training than we do, and has started to work on his turning abilities and more. We met with his owners in Moab, Utah where we shocked them with his progress! They were literally in tears… and it was a wonderful feeling. They were more than excited to get him back.

He surprised them by flying in their RV from his travel cage to the front of the RV just to be in the natural sunlight! They’ve never seen him more happy and energetic and they even got to see him fly outside.

This is Storm on DAY 1
Weight: 580 grams

And his transformation…

This is Storm on Day 45
Weight: 411 grams

Hi Jamie & Dave,
Just wanted to say “Thank you soooooo much” for all your efforts in helping Storm to reach a much healthier and happier way of living.

I can not put into words how amazed I am at how far Storm has come towards a great future. He is once again healthy and eating great. He looks so bright eyed and excited for life.

To see pictures of him flying outside brought tears to my eyes of shear joy. I hope we get to fly him while we are here in the desert!

Love and grattitude,
Jeannie & Storm

Blue throated macaw, Camelot macaws, Harlequin macaws

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Moab over the weekend to watch us free fly our birds outside! It was a pleasure to meet all of you as well as have you share in the beauty of what it’s like to have free flight trained parrots!

Harlequin Macaw

Saturday we spent at Fisher Towers nearby a canyon. Sunday was spent at the back side of Castle Rock. Very few people attended?both days, but those who did sure got some serious diversity.

Harlequin Macaw

It was a lively, yet laid back group that was fun and relaxed! We can’t wait to do it again and will let you all know when the next adventure will be!

Oh, and don’t forget to flaunt your bird owner apparel!

Harlequin Macaw

See you next time and happy flying!

Come Join Us Freeflying Parrots!

Watching pet parrots freefly outside is a breath-taking experience that can’t be matched. Seeing it on video and film is one thing, but being there to witness it in PERSON… is a whole other ball game you won’t be able to even describe.

Galah

One of our favorite places to freefly our parrots is Moab, Utah because of it’s gorgeous red-rock terrain and fewer numbers of predators. The wide open space and varied temperature makes for the greatest outdoor adventures for our birds and a great learning spot for them to adjust to wind with all the room in the world to practice in!

Military Macaw

Moab is where Cash, our military macaw, learned how to become an outdoor flier for the very first time. Cash was clipped when he came to us at 6 months of age! And if you join us next month, you will see him in person and see how much he has improved on his skill and stamina! He is a very avid learner but has earned the nickname “Crash” for a reason…

The rest of the parrots you will see freeflying in Moab with us are 3 other Macaws, 2 Cockatoos and 1 Congo African Grey. Making it a total of seven birds flying outside! For a sneak preview of what exotic birds like these look like on this kind of terrain, check out the video below taken in Page, AZ which carries the same red rock terrain as Moab with all the birds we will be flying for you out in Moab in April!

If you’re interested in joining us this coming April in Moab, Utah for an amazing experience of watching our parrots freefly right in front of your eyes… please email?info@birdtricks.com?and reserve your spot!

Happy flying and can’t wait to see you all there!
