Welcome Heather to this site. Your story is amazing, not having any experience with birds. What did you do to get the zoo to hire you?
I have 16 birds, mostly Moluccan Cockatoos, who are very smart. I've breed and raised 4 of them with my oldest baby being 18 years. I have had some of my flock for 35 years. I still learn every day how to treat and respect these beautiful creatures, as they can be so unpredictable. Good luck to you and I'll look forward to reading your stories.

My husband and i have 6 birds. One umbrella cockatoo, 1 yellow double head amazon, 1 sun counour, 1 fancy green cheek and two bungies. We have busy mornings. Two of the birds are potty trained to a perch over the sinks. They have their flight feathers. The 2 larger birds have their wings clipped. They all have large rolling stands so i can move them around in the morning with me getting ready for my day. Plus for me to clean their cages. They eat fruits and veggies in the morn. They will let us know when they wake up by calling us, saying HELLO. Then about dark the cockatoo will let us know its nighty, nite time. I play bird talking CDs to them. 90.3 for their spiritual. Ha! They like the calm talk. They love to be sung to. I love my birds even tho, yes, they can annoy you at times, and i'm sure we are annoying at times also.
