Don’t Have a Shower Perch? No Problem!

I forget to bring a shower perch with me all too often when I’m traveling. However, you don’t NEED a shower perch to get your bird to shower. Though I do believe it helps and everyone should have one ;)

Improvising: it’s something we ALL have to do every once in a while! My birds have showered in so many different places and I forget sometimes how often they are used to showering since it rains every day in Florida and I make sure if they aren’t outside already enjoying it, that I get them into aviaries so they can bathe if they want.

While on the road doing a winter tour, I took the picture above of my cockatoo Bondi showering at a friends’ house. Her shower was all stone and there was no way to make a suction cup stick to it (like many hotel showers and RV showers) however, the shower head was this long hose that hooked up high so that if you wanted to take it down and wash your body up close, you could. Well, I didn’t need to and so I set Bondi on the hose part!

The only thing I had to be careful of was her feet getting burned from the water going through, so I had to watch the temperature.

She still loved her shower and got tons of water and mist from me being above her, too! I often put my birds on the faucet which you would use to fill up a bath tub, when traveling and I can’t use the shower perch. This spot works great because they can still get into the shower and get wet from that spot and it works ANYWHERE!

Bandit just had a shower like this yesterday and was really into it. Remember: watch how how the water gets if you like really hot showers because you don’t want to go burning your bird’s feet. If you can’t hold your hand there for an extended amount of time, your bird can’t be expected to either. When in doubt, don’t do it or make the water cooler.
