Indian Ringneck Parrots

Got another SUPER quick update for anyone interested in learning more about Indian Ringneck Parrots. I did a recent survey of all of our subscribers to our parrot training newsletter the other day and was VERY surprised to discover logs of people own Indian ringnecks.

So we decided to post up some general information about Indian Ringneck Parrots for you to look over on our website. If you’re looking for info about the right types of cages, or just wanting to research more about Indian Ringnecks before deciding if buying one is right for you… then you might want to check out this section of our website.

Have not seen alot of info. on the Ringneck and this is helpful. I was given a young male named Fred in July of 2007. We have renamed him “Rocco” after the Rocky series. He did nothing but scream. Now he barks like a (little) dog, whistles, and comes to me and a few family members. He is definately a mommas boy! I would like to be able to teach him to talk real words, wasn’t sure Ringnecks were capable of speech. I hope to gather more training techniques from you. Thank you.

I am the third person to have Chip-Chip. He has about fifteen words he says.
At first he loved me and kissed on my cheek-rode on my shoulder, then one day he was on my knee and I leaned over to talk to him and he flew up
and bit my lip. About two days later he bit threw my shirt and made my arm bleed. Now he wants to bite me every chance he gets. He takes food from my fingers but refuses to come to me. Now he has bonded with my husband and even lets him pet him. Also I have never been able teach him any new words. Did teach him to whistle like a Quail. I love him, but the feeling isn’t
returned.

Hi. My name is Marcy and while in the petstore with my husband, Bob, we saw an albino ringneck that was up for consignment. We were told that the owners could no longer afford to keep her. She is three years old, and loves men. Well, my husband fell for her right off. We left the store and before we made it home I had to turn around and get the bird for him (early birthday gift). As I stated earlier Adrian(her new name) adores men. She and I have a love/hate relationship. She loves my husband and hates me. I have told her that we will one day be fast friends, hehe. Although she still cage guards around me, she will let me hand her treats when she is out of the cage, and just today willingly stepped onto my hand and let me put her into the cage. A great accomplishment considering that I have very little time to work with her. I have a full time job (48hrs a week) and two birds of my own, a nine month old funloving lovebird, Freddie, and an eight month old cockatiel, Punkie. I am looking forward to trying some of your techniques with her in the hope that she will allow me to put my hands into to cage to get her treat bowl and to change out toys while she is still in the cage.

My husband bought me 2 Indian Ringnecks for my birthday back in March. I have always wanted birds to add to my collection of pets that I consider as my children. I am reading as much as I can on these particular parrots but unfortunately I was given false information when they were purchased. No one in the store seemed to agree on the age of the creatures, so I believed them to be young. When I researched it I found out that they are actually mature already and are at least 2 years old. Since they are no longer babies it is really difficult to train them since they obviously haven’t been touched my human hands regularly enough, they are terrified of human hands. They are a mated pair and I love them and will take as much time is needed to teach them of this fact and the more I read, the more I learn of their behaviour and the more I understand the particulars about them. They haven’t started to speak yet, they speak more to eachother, but they are beginning to scream a lot less which is nice. I am interacting with them everyday but I find it is a painfully long process. If anyone has any ideas about the best way to go about training them that I am a trusted friend and not someone who is going to hurt them, I would greatly appreciate any advice. I had to take them to the vet to get their wings clipped today and it was an awful experience. Since they do not listen to me yet I had to catch them which is a most distressful experience for all involved. I need as much help as possible.
