Should We Share Table Food With Our Birds?

Hyacinth macaw

Q: Is it okay to feed my new blue and gold macaw the same foods as I eat at dinner?
– Devin B., Bethesda, MD

A: Yes. And no. Most of the foods we eat are good for parrots: fruits, vegetables, pastas, grains, fish and small amounts of  lean cooked meats. The term table food generally is used in reference to our preparation of these foods, at which time they begin to get unhealthy. We add salt, sugar, butter, sour cream, and dressings to make the foods more palatable and enjoyable for us. These additions are not good for birds for all the same reasons they are not good for us.

We have about 10.000 taste buds in our mouths – a bird has less than 100. My discovery over the years is that a bird will eat squash that has not been doctored up to make it taste better, so why add anything?  It just raises calories that a caged bird will have trouble expending. The best food for a parrot is in its most natural form.

When you are cooking for yourself, simply separate your bird’s portion from your own before you add those things which are unhealthy for a bird.

Rosebreated cockatoo

Be aware that you can develop bad eating habits in your bird very easily. Even with their scant 100 taste buds, a bird is able to detect and differentiate flavors and will know if something he has grown to like is missing. This may cause him to turn away from the more healthy version of the same food. This is why it might be best that he never learns how good maple syrup is on the whole wheat waffle he now enjoys without it.

Start your bird off right by introducing him to a diet that is healthy and free from human culinary taste preferences.

We have an adorable Quaker he loves everything we eat, rice, pasta, veggies, fruit, granola with milk, yogurt, chicken, right now we are giving him snow peas from the garden, if someone offers him something that is seasoned he does not tend to like it. The one bad vice he has is he does seem to like salty things if it is offerd and fresh strawberries with a little vanilla ice cream before bed. He is a flighted bird and is only in his cage if we have to be gone, WHEW thank goodness cause he eats and i think he could be a little chubby. We have a vet visit coming up, worried about the weight check!!

Joey  07/06/2011 1:38 pm

Can birds have strawberries?

maggie  07/06/2011 2:05 pm

my quaker loves hard cheese. he knows when i take it out of the fridge and wants it so bad!

Joan  07/06/2011 2:09 pm

My blue and gold also loves plain pasta, and cooked corn on the cob, absent the buter of course.

Sally  07/06/2011 2:13 pm

Jeff, This is what’s wrong with soy: http://www.optimumchoices.com/Soy.htm

My mom and I were eating chicken one day and I put a bone aside and my cockatiel `Piper’ walked over and started to eat the little left pieces. We were both surprised and my mother said `That’s your cousin you know’ . Piper loved chicken , pork, pretzels , frosted flakes and english muffins. Piper and my mother used to share breakfast together.

Tonia  07/06/2011 2:14 pm

I recently took in a 5 year old goffin cockatoo (Buttons) that has some bad eating habits. We already have a 1 year old Blue and Gold Macaw (Valentino) that follows your suggestion of natural pellets and fresh fruits and vegies but it has been difficult to get the goffin to eat the heathly things, any suggestions

Rich W.  07/06/2011 2:15 pm

My Indian Ringneck LOVES Animal Crackers but she only gets one a day when we have some. She also loves hot air popped popcorn! We always share with her when we eat it (plain of course).

Sharyn Irwin  07/06/2011 2:15 pm

My Quaker will eat pretty much what I am having. He loves rice, mac & cheese, and spaghetti with no sauce. Also, toast (no butter), chicken, turkey, scrambled eggs, and just about any green veggie with no dressing or dip.

aliciary  07/06/2011 2:17 pm

mine love KFC but no skin hates popeyes
my nanday loves dry pasta he will open a kitchen cabinet and rip open a box just to get it

Colleen  07/06/2011 2:18 pm

Lucy is always eating from my plate, but I do not season my own food. I can tell you, she loves ranch dressing…
My grey loves Dorito’s, his first owner fed them to him and when he sees the bag he goes nuts.

Nell Matthews  07/06/2011 2:19 pm

Sun conure, Cheddar, won’t eat berries – strawberry, blue berry, black berry, etc. Gives the same signal he gives for avocado – runs his tongue up and down, bobs his head, and refuses the food. I’m betting he can’t have fresh berries like he can’t have avocado. Jam is OK, just not fresh. When I am away, my son doesn’t share all the bad food (eg what I am eating) with Cheddar, and so he eats about 3x the amount of healthy food than when I am there. After my return this time, I vow to restrict Cheddar’s food to in the cage and only in response to good behavior. I always frowned on people who fed dogs at the table. I should heed my own prejudices.

Leisha  07/06/2011 2:25 pm

My African Grey Timneh, Choochie, LOVES popcorn. I try to give her the pieces with the least butter, and only once a week or so. She also loves meat and eggs (which just seems wrong!). The kids gave her a treat of cheese puffs over the holiday and they were a big hit as well, but she won’t get them again! They really can be junk food junkies!

tasha  07/06/2011 2:34 pm

my cockatiels, eat mostly anything i eat, although i wont let them have anything salty or sugary or just strait up fattening, I mostly only allow steamed veggies, pastas and eggs, wheat breads, and of course fruits, everyonce in a while i will let them have a bite or two from a potatoe chip, I will not allow them to go to town on it. but i see nothing wrong with the occasional bite as a treat.

Aleta  07/06/2011 2:56 pm

The way I look at this Problem. Is it’s the human problem not your birds. You should think about it like this: If your bird lived in their natural environment would they have access to the junk food you eat? That’s a NO. so If there is no store in the wild. Just feed your bird what is natural, made from the earth. Nature. They will live longer, be healthy and happy. And they wouldn’t know the difference of what’s good for them or not unless the Human tries to make them human also. Happy Parroting. I have a Scarlet Macaw, and a padigonian Conure.

Judy Ventrella  07/06/2011 2:57 pm

My birds love soy beans they have to extract from the pods – edamame. My newest bird, a 15 yr old Goffins cockatoo, is having a hard time learning to eat healthy food. And learning that it is never going to be eaten from our dinner plates

Gwen  07/06/2011 3:02 pm

My little cockatiel, loves to eat cooked jungle oats, I don’t add sugar or milk though, just water… not sure if it is healthy for her? Yes / No ??? Not a big veggie eater and fruit is a no no, not even apples.

Janet Sherman  07/06/2011 3:11 pm

I had a parakeet that loved balsamic vinegar and came to the bowl every time I finished my salad (no oil). Wouldn’t eat the lettuce!

Can’t get the birds I have now to eat anything but bird seed, they ignore everything else.

Shama Chitnis  07/06/2011 3:11 pm

Our Kuku, african Gray loves our curries and vegetables with spices and wants it on his rice at dinner time. He never ate our food till last year when we came back after a month. we started giving him little curry on his rice, but then sometimes we feel he cant digest it. He was not well again last week so have stopped everything except plain rice. but he keeps asking for it when we eat and i really feel bad and dont know what to do. He was sick a few years ago and i am worried about him since then. we dont know if he was sick two weeks ago because of the cold or because of food he eats. we love him so much and dont know what to do.

Linda Nachimson  07/06/2011 3:15 pm

My Cockatoo loves edamame. He also loves to eat corn on the cob, fava beans in it’s pod, whole wheat bread with cream cheese and pasta. He also eats chicken and I sometimes give him a chicken bone to chew up. He loves the marrow in it.

Don  07/06/2011 3:22 pm

My Severe Macaw eats most vegies and loves lean meat. He is allowed a bowl of “people food” while we eat our dinner, but his is in his cage. He loves to have corn on the cob. Once he finishes the corn, he uses the cob as a “distroy toy” and there is nothing left of it except small chunks.

Karen Robbins  07/06/2011 3:27 pm

someone said something about avocados…. they are toxic aren’t they? Please don’t give any bird or dog avocado.

Rich Smithlin  07/06/2011 3:34 pm

My first bird,a 30 yr old African grey in poor health was given to me. Long story short the birds diet was nothing but seed. Upon taking this bird to a very highly recognized aviary vet I was informed of how diverse a diet these birds really need. I was told that the bird should eat whatever I do. Now there are some dangerous foods out there so this should be checked out before feeding your bird, avacodos and other foods can kill your bird.so google up a check list of what not to feed them. My grey got much healther after it diversified it’s eating habit.

Carole  07/06/2011 3:41 pm

Our Grey loves corn right off the cob. Has fun chewing up the cob after the kernels are gone.
I

Brian Englehutt  07/06/2011 4:09 pm

Our grey ( Telus ) shares what we usually eat, but I didn’t think they wre allowed to eat fish or meat. He loves to eat spicy. Likes mashed potatoes, pastas with tomato sauce nearly all green vegies. Cantalope, blue berries ( messy ) banana and corn on the cob he goes crazy hardly anything left when he is finished. He goes bizerk when I give him a little piece of licorice but I don’t know if it is good for him, maybe someone can tell me. It is the best treat I have found to make him do just about anything.

Laurilee  07/06/2011 4:36 pm

My Bluefronted Amazon, Jerry is a carbaholic…just like me…but we are working on better healthier choices.
I hate to admit it but he even likes some chicken and turkey!

Misty  07/06/2011 5:20 pm

Our ruby and miligold macaws make that yummy sound (“MMMMMM!”) when they get something they like, even if they have never had it before. The only bird we have that won’t eat any people food is our umbrella cockatoo, she will only eat oranges other than pellets.

D. Becnel  07/06/2011 5:22 pm

Our Yellow Nape is hooked on boiled crawfish and american cheese. He loves the crawfish claws and when we start putting it on the table – he starts yelling “What About Les”? (his name is Lester) until you give him claws. He will practically leap off his cage for cheese. He eats everything except chocolate and avocado.

rob  07/06/2011 5:28 pm

Nell Matthews you shouldnt let your conure near avacado……berries are fine for conures

Maddy C.  07/06/2011 5:30 pm

Mine adores any kind of pasta, especially curly noodles. She also loves pizza, chicken legs and adores beef but we don’t eat that very often. She will get a very rare jelly bean (drives her nuts just to see them). She does like edame in the pod and yogurt. She gets parrot food for a supplement. I’ve had her for 19 years and she stays healthy. Oh yeah, she likes 1/4 of a whole grain blueberry waffle for breakfast and 3 almonds before bed. She’s a yellow naped amazon.

Jeff  07/06/2011 5:37 pm

our 6yr old Cockatiel loves to eat rice (brown or white) just plain, and spagittie, but our Cherry pie

Conure ( which is a sun conure; cherry head mix ) only like bowtie pasta and spagittie type pasta.
they both also like Cheerios; with out milk. The Cherrypie Conure is 3yrs old.

Dawn  07/06/2011 5:54 pm

My blue & gold Macaw LOVES pancakes (no syrup), eggs & his eyes really get big when I give him peanut butter crackers. He only gets about 1 or 2 a week. He gets plain crackers often. When we eat he always says bite I wanna bite. If he gets no bite, we get no peace. His screams cut like a knife.

Tom Ross  07/06/2011 6:16 pm

Our Blue and Gold and Greenwing will eat just about anything with zest, especially pasta and pizza. We allow them to have what they want and monitor their droppings. We feed them a pellet and when the droppings change color from the pellet droppings brownish color to another color, they don’t get any more table food until they get back to the pellet They will try to “wait you out” for the good stuff and not eat pellet if you allow them.

rayray  07/06/2011 6:23 pm

humans should learn to eat the way their bird does … and eat what their bird eats!!!!!
NEVER,NEVER let a quaker eat table ”scraps” … quakers have a genetic abnormality that causes accumulation of lipids and cholesterol and>>>>>FATTY LIVER>>>>> EARLY DEATH….

TRY NOT TO ALLOW YOUR BIRD TO EAT SIMPLE CARBS– empty calories… RATHER THAN nutritious fruits, vegies, nuts, grains… halapenios[sic] and if seasoning is necessary a touch of ”salsa…”

Wendy Middleton  07/06/2011 6:42 pm

I have been sharing my fresh local strawberries with my Quaker for the past two weeks and he absolute loves them. He also likes blueberries and mango and to a lesser extent raspberries. With the other berries, he will eat yogurt and cheerios, but with the strawberries in the picture, he ignores the other food mostly. I really hope that I haven’t caused him any harm by introducing him to strawberries. They are probably out of season now locally. Last year I remember that he adored fresh peaches, which we will be getting soon.

I haven’t had avocado in the house (even though I love it) since I brought Mickey home, nearly two years ago, so I don’t know how he would react to it.

Patty PV  07/06/2011 7:41 pm

Our blue and gold macaw loves garbanzo beans. Better if I make them from a package of dried beans, but she will eat canned beans (which I rinse) as well as no-salt snack garbanzos with chili and lime. She LOVES those. And dried veggies. Good to have on hand to supplement the fresh fruits and veggies.

Valery  07/06/2011 7:45 pm

I catch my jenday conure, Marley trying to steal cokes. If you leave one somewhere he’ll try to push it out of sight so he can lick the top. He has even knocked one over to get to the coke inside. He knows he is not allowed to drink it and will throw a fit when I take it from him. I have to be extra careful about turning my back on him when there is a coke in the room!

Maddie Wingett  07/06/2011 8:04 pm

I cook a mish mash of food for Newbie, freeze it in small containers and he gets that for breakfast and supper…Before he gets his cooked food for supper I give him some of my fresh salad first (without the dressing) so he gets more fresh veggies that way,…
At noon I give him fresh peas from the pod or steamed yams, steamed frozen corn or peas..etc…
He gets any kind of fresh fruit, especially pomagranate which he loves, Once in a while I give him a small bit of junk food…
He has an enormous appetite for a small parrot..I leave pellets for him and then I also give him a handful of bird seeds/treats when I leave the house.
He eats better than I do.LOL
.I feel like it’s a he eats and I clean deal all day long but he is active, healthy and happy..

Gary  07/06/2011 8:12 pm

People food is just as bad for people as it is for birds.

Today my 8 macaws dined on cream corn and sunflower seeds.

Variety.

Roger Leclercq  07/06/2011 10:38 pm

My 26yr old African Gray goes nuts over Cheteos also loves corn on the cob, brocolly, chicken steak and steamed crabs as well as her pellets and seed.

Marjorie Hoppas  07/06/2011 10:54 pm

i have a cockateil named Binky, who loves to eat with me when I eat breakfast. He always enjoys the food that I have. but if there is something there that he doesn’t like, he won’t even try it. He doesn’t like bananas, or any other type of fruit. He does like veggies and pasta, and cheese, and chips. I try to make sure that he gets some type of balanced food. LOL Binky knows when I am fixing food because he can smell it. He always starts to squawk whenever he is in his cage and I am fixing a meal. Whenever he is out, he flies onto my shoulder and watches me fix food. He is quite the character.

Kathie Mintzmyer  07/07/2011 1:18 am

Thank-You for your imfo. I feed my parrots just about everything but mainly fruit, vegies, breads, crackers, and lean cooked meat. Also peanuts, but they just won’t eat other nuts for some reason. I never gave them fish for I was afraid it would be like a poisen to sicken them. They are going to be happy that you clued me in that they can have fish now. My husband and I go around and around about feeding the dogs pork, for I know it is not good for them. Is it alright for parrots though,,,like bacon?
Again thank-you for the new lesson today.

Bridget Davidtsz  07/07/2011 2:46 am

My African Grey is perhaps one of the most loved birds on the planet! He has a diet that will rival that of kings…paw paw pips, paw paw, orange (and loves the skin), nartjie, granadilla, grapes (particulatry fond of cabernet and malbec), brussel sprouts, pomegranate, organic dried cranberries, rasins, turkish apricots, pumpkin seeds, guava, organic egg (every two weeks), organic kidney beans, peas, chick peas, barley, brocolli, sugar snap peas, fresh chillies, organic wheat free pasta, squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, beetroot, spinach, lychees, potatoes, wild and brown rice etc…he really loves steamed prawns with fresh Chilli sauce and lamb chops (trimmed of excess fat) and fresh fish and of course some cousin (chicken)…

NO SUNFLOWER / PEANUTS! Enjoys some canary seed and millet. Gets 1/2 an organic pecan nut every evening for which he will do just about anything!

I do not cook with salt / sugar/ butter so I hope that herbs won’t hurt him? Does anyone know?

Prasanna  07/07/2011 3:18 am

My Wild parrot sweetie n Tweetie likes to eat uncooked noodles. Might be it likes the crunchiness of the noodles. They love Guava and Sunflower seeds.

Thea  07/07/2011 8:32 am

My African Grey gets excited, dances, flaps his wings whenever he THINKS we are about to eat something…if we even open the cupboard door, pantry door, refrigerator….he is sooo funny….he LOVES peanut butter so we give him a tiny bit but not before he does a trick…he has to work for it!

Thea  07/07/2011 8:32 am

Gloria Buck  07/07/2011 8:44 am

My African Grey is such a food snob. When I feed her she walks over to the bowl and then turns her head sideways to look in the bowl and if it is not what she wants she will walk away and just look at me like, is that it? She loves scramble eggs for breakfast and I take her to the restaurant across the street and they know what she likes so they bring her a plate too! We sit outside.

Bird Man's wife  07/07/2011 8:50 am

Our Amazon stole a piece of Bacon off my husband’s plate on morning, as we were distracted by a phone call. By the time we noticed, she had already eaten most of it. Ever since then she trieed to get his bacon, when it is served. Needless to day… bacon is a no, no for her. One of our Congo, African Greys adores grapes. If given the chance that is all he would eat. So we have to hide the grapes from him. OH, and also note… please do not give your birds coffee. It has the same effect on a bird as alcohol has on us.

Nicole Link  07/07/2011 10:02 am

Ive only ever fed my Eccy fruit and veg with raw nuts as treats. Never pellets or seed (ok except sunflower seeds for training purposes) and never table ‘scraps’, he eats a varied diet (all sorts of stuff I wouldnt eat!) and is perfectly happy and healthy. Although my husband believes he is possibly the most spoiled and expensive pet in the world lol

Shirley woods  07/07/2011 12:39 pm

Well for nine years I have been feeding my patagonian conure from the table, plus his mix of food from omars. His favorite is sphagetti and green salad mostly lettuce. he loves it can eat a lot if I don’t stop him. He has a good appetite, he loves alittle fruit, string beans, corn, lima beans, green peas, lettuce, carrots any way whole, diced, shredded or cooked, he loves chicken with no seasoning, he does not like fish I guess that’s because Ireally don’t care that much for it either.
When we sit down to eat especially dinner ( my husband gets so upset) ChooChoo has a water cup too, and when he finish eating he will on his own grab the cup and try and drink his water. he is the apple of my eye and maybe that’s why my husband say he’s too spoiled. maybe that’s why he tells my husband to be quiet. I love both of them.

Joanne  07/07/2011 2:14 pm

Well my Mr.Rocky .. a Mullacan won’t eat anything once he smells the barbeque on.. he waits very patiently for his little piece of well done steak, chicken, fish, or shrimp.. there is no way to convience him that a piece of sweet potatoe, carrot, green beans etc is better for him.. so well .. ah ha.. he wins.. and of course if a french fry is in his eye shot.. ah ha.. that too..

We love him so much .. although he was abused by previous owner and has some very bad temper fits.. he has been in our lives for 9 yrs now.. and getting better as time goes.. and well he is who he is..

We now live in sunny Antigua.. in the Leeward islands and his outdoor showers are great fun no more cold weather for him .. or us… but there is no Avian Vets here.. sure wish one would move here.. or maybe graduate from our Vet University and stay..

Bill Wiseman  07/07/2011 5:21 pm

I wish I had read more posting about parrots; I must have missed this one about something very important.

On the first birthday our Grey was able to say “Gracce is one year old”, two days later she died of lead poisoning from a table near her play pen.

I know it is a sad note about good food blog but maybe it may save another. Our Cleo, a young Grey, eats reasonable table food, minimal salt minimal sugar.

kathleen from nyc, ny  07/07/2011 8:08 pm

I have a male yellow nape. His name is POPEYE. we feed him his parrot mix, papaya, and sunflower seeds, and slivered almonds as a treat. He also enjoys vegetables, anything that he can hold in his claw and eat.

david woolcombe  07/08/2011 2:43 am

dear chet /dave

Cherrie  07/08/2011 4:46 am

I too have made the mistake of allowing my bird to have potato chips and his favorite thing to drink is root beer. He even will ask for it by name. I only allow it occassionally as I drink it only occassionally. I am of the mind that if it is not a regular diet it’s not going to do a whole lot of damage and it can actually be a treat, just like for humans. Balance is the name of the game!

Linda bowen  07/08/2011 8:32 am

My rainbow lorri also loves pizza, but one night I gave him garlic bread crust and he fell over and could not walk , in fact he fell over and could not get up. It was really scary to see an animal that you love on deaths door. Thankfully he recovered. I’m a lot more careful now. But he sees me coming with the morning cappacino and likes to lick the chocolate dust off the lid.

Robin  07/08/2011 11:26 am

Good point, and not only chocolate and avocado, but according to our avian vet, also uncooked tomatoes, celery (evidently the “strings” in the celery can cause impacted crops or clog up the intestinal tract, requiring surgery or causing death…). raw onions and garlic, cherry pits (which have a small amount of cyanide in them!) and raw peanuts (aspergillosis hazard). Our little pals especially love raisin and spice oatmeal for breakfast, pizza crusts, and to grab a “chunk” of the boiled ground chicken we add to our dog’s dinner, as well as their own “tacos” – a piece of toasted taco shell with a sprinkling of shredded cheese, a small bite of the chicken and a piece of lettuce on top! Their favorite “guilty pleasure” – a tiny taste of whipped cream on a piece of apple or grape.

Donelda Snyder  07/08/2011 4:35 pm

My Goffin’s Cockatto, Desi, is an extremely fussy eater. He will eat his pellets and seeds, almonds, soda crackers, and sometimes a slice of banana. After that, he behaves like we are trying to poison him. I have tried him on all kinds of fruit, veggies, and grains. Sigh. At least he keeps life simple that way.

mks281  07/08/2011 10:20 pm

I’ve got several cockatiels (just love them!) that I either found (my first one) or took in (the other 3) “we” are the proud new “parents” of two babies who are developing very quickly! I house them in two connected ferret cages giving them lots and lots of room and several levels. I’m still learning about the birds…they will not eat vegetables or fruit just the seed mix (I usually buy the more expensive brands available at PetSmart). Do you cook the pasta? Any recommendations on getting these birds to eat something other than seed?

darlenehowarth@aol.com  07/09/2011 9:33 am

Joseph Lopez  07/09/2011 10:25 am

I have a rescued- wild caught yellow nape amazon. He came with the name ‘Tequila’. He did not not like women, blond hair, gloves, any type of brushes and brooms, mops sticks etce. With tid bits he has learned to Step up, and have meals with us but only in his cage. He will not accept anything outside of his cage. He loves most fruits, pizza crust and sticks, pasta first w/o sauce, w/sauce after. He peels his grapes. frozen or not. He enjoys eating together with us.Never chocolate anything caffeinated, ice cream, avocadoes, hot peppers or spic(y)es. He has learned to associate the noises from the stove, microwave, toaster and refrigerator with ‘COOKING FOOD and his squaks of Maww. Paww. and JOSIPHER. Josipher or joseph is my name according to him.He now plays tug -o-war with my wife and daughter but only from inside his cage. But sorting the clean laundry is his chore and he has to be caged to keep him from attacking the women.Tequila is 24 years old apparently never had much positive training before. He has been with for over three yrs now and is a full member of the family. joel

Karen Joss  07/09/2011 4:26 pm

My Gallah had never expressed any particular interest in people food until she spied me eating General Tsao chicken. She made a beeline from her playstand to my plate and took it over. This little bird was dragging pieces of spicy chicken out of the bowl and getting very bossy if I tried to stop her. She also loved the wild and brown rice I had with it

natasha smith  07/10/2011 10:29 am

Thank you so much for verifying that I am not crazy for sharing meals with Laroo my conure. My grandchildren say their “Tutu” is wierd, because she eats with her bird!’
Natasha Smith

Sandy Brooks  07/10/2011 2:46 pm

Nothing with garlic &/or onions, which are toxic to birds. If I plan to share something with my birds, I prepare it without seasoning, take out the bird’s portion, then season my food.

Dianna  07/10/2011 2:51 pm

There is a yellow necked amazon at our local pet store that a woman brought in approximately 4-5 yrs ago. His name is Norman and he’s 25 yrs old. She raised him from a baby and for some unknown reason he attacked, and she ended up with 18 stitches in her face, so she gave him to the pet store and he’s been caged since. Does anyone know of a bird sanctuary that knows what to do in a situation like this. It seems a cruelty for Norman to spend the rest of his life caged when he had freedom for 20 plus yrs. He is definitely a woman’s bird. I live in Washington, so if you know of anyone please contact me at wolfsrule57@yahoo.com Thanks.

My 2yr old Too just loves Mac and cheese! He eats almost everything we eat just blander. Don’t expect to get it back once he gets it. Give him something he don’t like and you better duck because he will throw it at you! lol

I am so confused. Every time I read these comments I see people giving their birds things that I have been told not to feed mine and on the other hand I feed my bird things that people here say should not be fed to them.. I have an African Grey, Martha, which I purchased here in Nigeria where they come from and have raised her since nine months and she is now almost 5..We love her dearly and have always tried to feed healthy foods that she might eat in the wild since that is where she came from. She was raised on peanuts which is what they give them before you buy them, she has never had any problem with them at all to date, also she eats fresh tomatoes everyday and the same applies. She absoutely loves garlic, but when I seen someone on here say that it was not good for her I stopped giving it to her.. She has a large variety of foods, including mango, bananna, potatoes(raw), celery leaves, cucumber, okra, green beans, and fresh peas. She loves fresh lime, and orange, (not too often) because of the acid, pineapple, guava, corn-boiled and roasted. She is crazy for cashews (fresh-unsalted) which grow here and most other nuts. She doesn’t seem to like seeds much unless they in a plant or something. I had my husband buy her the local millet seed with some other little seeds in it as well and she will only eat a few and toss the rest in her cup on the ground, but the seeds tossed grew up into plants; in the rich African soil; and she loves the millet that has grown on the plants.
Until recently I did not feed her any milk products at all but since Chet mentioned that a little once in awhile wouldn’t hurt them I have now started giving her a little cheese on occasion and the odd touch of icecream both which she loves. Peanutbutter is another story, if she hears me opening the jar she is there like a dirty shirt and will pester me till I give her some.. but that not too often. As far as the other folks that said they have the world’s most spoiled bird int he world, NO that would be mine, she is like a dog and follows us everywhere, in and out of the house.. she is never caged except at night. In fact she is sitting with me; on my lap right now and if I don’t pay attention to her while I am typing she will pinch me,, little bugger. I forgot to mention that she also has a steady diet of electrical cords etc. another computer mouse bit the dirt last night.. she has this obsession with chewing anything that has a cord attached to it. Oh Boy!!! I am in trouble with my husband again:::::: BUT WE LOVE HER… ANYWAY!!!

I have a jenday conuer, Skipper. GOT HIM AT 6 months and he is now a year and 3 months old. The cage top is always open, unless I am out of town. He climbs down a rope and follows me everywhere- to the shower(which he loves), and anywhere else he thinks that I am. I hear him sqawking and his little feet clicking on the floor. He screems when he hears my car pull in the drive. My husband calls it love. The cat, Beach, and he are friends that can’t live without yet tolerate eah other. So far the only fruit he will eat is tangerines and he will nibble on broccolli. He does eat pizza crust though! He gets really excited whe I shake the cereal box as well. I hope thahe will expand his flavors.

@ Lynn,
I am late in responding to this, but you raised such good questions! First, here is a link to a post that speaks in part about foods that are “questionable”. In other words, those that are not unsafe, but have properties to them that have cause some birds minor problems. This is an opinion based post, citing my experience with my own flock and that of friends.: http://www.birdtricks.com/blog/unsafe-foods-for-parrots/.
The best way to avoid problems with certain foods like garlic, a wonderfully healthy food which can be unhealthy if served too frequently, is to use moderation and be observant of your bird’s reaction to it. The very best parrot diet is very varied. Doing this sees that all the nutritional bases are covered and it forces moderation in certain foods. It also makes the general diet more interesting and appealing to your bird. If you are having good luck with your bird’s current diet, and he is healthy, stick to it. Other birds, with different needs and preferences, may eat differently.
