The Night Before Christmas “Cockatoo Style”

This is priceless.  For those of you with cockatoos, especially goffins, the engineering variety of cockatoo, you will treasure this.  Once again, the author is unknown:

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the flights,
Not a bird was stirring since I turned off the lights.
Clean dishes were stacked by the freezer with care,
So in the morning they would be filled with fresh healthy fare.
The birds were all fed and put out to play,
Everyone was settled – I was done for the day.

When down from the basement there arose such a clatter,
That I ran for the stairs to see what was the matter.
I raced down the steps and turned down the light,
Glancing first to the left and then to the right.
It was then that I noticed the now empty spot,
In the cage where the Cockatoos should be but were not!

The Goffins are missing I yelled to my spouse,
While I shuddered to think what they’d do to the house.
My fears were well founded I soon came to know.
As I surveyed the destruction in the bird room below.
Feeding doors had been opened, the dishes all tossed,
Bags were ripped open their contents all lost.
The marauders unfastened from the cage tops each toy,
which they tossed at the occupants below with such joy.

The other birds sulked as they viewed the whole mess,
This Cockatoo duo had created such stress!
I searched through the room, my frustration profound,
Those two fiendish beasts simply weren’t to be found!
It was then that I noticed the Senegal staring,
As his eyes flashed with anger I saw he was glaring
Towards the side of the room at an overturned pail.
I followed his gaze and saw a flash of white tail.

Holding my breath as I approached with great care,
Was it possible both could be hiding in there?
I snatched up the bucket and the villains were exposed,
They knew they were busted and for a second they froze,
Then the Cockatoo shriek and scrambling of feet,
They raced for their cage in hasty retreat.
I slammed the door shut as I trembled with rage,
Don’t you two ever, ever come out of your cage!

They stared at me smugly cheeks puffed with contentment,
Their mission accomplished they ignored my resentment.
I’ll clean up tomorrow.
I said aloud with a sigh
As I walked toward the steps one ‘Too said “bye bye.”
As I turned with a grin I felt suddenly calm,
Their sweet little voices could act as a balm.

For along with their mischief, they brought love and fun,
It was hard to stay angry despite what they’d done.

My jangled nerves and life’s hectic pace,
Had made me forget what was in my face.
I didn’t need gifts, fancy stuff from the store.
I had all I needed, my birds and much more!

My dear friends and family, my health and my spouse,
Everything that mattered was right here in this house.
So Santa I thank you but I don’t need a lot,
I’m learning to be grateful for all that I’ve got.
If you come down my chimney to leave something new,
Just leave me some padlocks so I can lock up the ‘Toos!!

I wish you all the happiest holidays and the brightest new year.

We have a pair of Goffins. We laughed as I read this poem out loud to my husband. It was all so true. He said, Been there, did that and bought the t’shirt, but the too’s bit a hold in it. lol
Loved the poem, thank you for sharing.

Merry Christmas and We hope you have a Happy, Healthy New Year for you and your feathered friends!

As a bird owner and lover I can relate,
birds can be a handful with a simple mistake
I have had my messes and they’ve had their fun
but all in all its my heart they have won
So Womack Family, I share with these words
The delight and love I’ve found in my birds….
Training is simple, Thanks to your clan
I’d not trade my video’s for none in the land
So our family wishes you a Merry Holiday
as we keep training our birds-The Womack Way..

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

Although I do not have a cockatoo I enjoyed this poem. I have many birds and they are all precious to me. On the radio today was playing “Santa Claus is coming to town”. I started swaying with the beat. My blue-throated macaw, Mia, scrambled up to her highest perch and began to sway with the beat. I then looked over at my Afican Grey, Simon, and he was bobbing his head up and down to the beat. And not least, but my Duyvenbode Lory, CoCo, was flapping her wings and hopping up and down. Such fun!

Very Merry Christmas to you and your flock!

Larry Hunn  12/24/2009 4:17 pm

Thanks for the great story. Only thing different the birds would be lovebirds. Had a pair get out and stay in the Christmas tree when I was in California. Only one at a time would go to the cage and eat and drink, when that one left the cage the other one would go in eat and drink then back to the tree. I wasn’t able to get them both to the cage for about 3 months.

LuLu Glass  12/24/2009 4:17 pm

Thanks for the great poem. I have a Quaker and he is a real test of patience. Today, while listening to Christmas Carols, I realized that my Quaker sings Jingle Bells. He was previously owned and came to me singing Happy Birthday but Christmas Carols is quite something.

Merry Christmas to all!

Mollie  12/24/2009 6:45 pm

Dear Chet,
Thanks for sharing your poem. It could also relate to two eclectus parrots who wait for me to leave the room before getting into mischief.
Was terrified a few weeks ago when I heard an intruder talking in my house at 3am. As I was on my own, I could not decide whether to confront him , turn on a light or make a noise. I decided to use my mobile and call the police. Just as I started dialling, I heard the familiar “Hello Birdbrain” and realised it was my Wally talking in his sleep.

Dot Lohnes  12/24/2009 6:51 pm

verry cute and O so true Dot and Misty is my Umbrella.

Robert Hidalgo  12/24/2009 6:58 pm

Thank you for these lines, they brought a smile to my face as I recalled my yellow nape parrot chewing on my kitchen cabinets doors, I tried to get mad at him but then he said, Hello Spiky and that was the end of it. Merry Christmas to all. Robert and Spiky.

Angie  12/24/2009 7:23 pm

Love the poem! I have an African Grey, when she is nauty she comes to me and say ” Budgie love you”…. thats when I start running thru the house, looking for what is broken and start calling the dogs to see who servive her atack. She dont like her cage, so she lives in the house with us, sometime on the cage, but only if she must…. other wyse she would go to bed with us, and sleep on my pillow at my head. She is only 14 months old!

Renee Sinrod  12/24/2009 7:26 pm

Your poem is delightful but please explain to me how a clatter could arise down from a basement or to go down to down the light? Shouldn’t the word “up” be used in both cases? Wishing you the best greetings, I am an 83 year old who was given an eleven year old cockatiel because the lady who had him couldn’t take care of him anymore. The sight of a hand reaching towards him (?) puts him into cardiac arrest and with the cage doors wide open he will not come out of the cage. His former owner, when she heard I was having the bird fly around was amazed since he didn’t know how to fly. That’ s when I orderd yur course to help this poor incarcerated bird. I just got it yesterday (the course that is) and will start to use it to calm his fears. So far, I have gotten the bird to sit on my arm and I can take him out of the cage and when he flys and lands, I can put my finger under his chest and he climbs aboard immediately. With your help, I hope I can convince him that I am his friend and not his keeper.

Denise Heath  12/24/2009 7:29 pm

This was great!!! If that was mmy Goffin Percy, all the lights would have been taken out of the tree!!

Evelyn and Dani  12/24/2009 7:32 pm

Lovely poem, have a merry xmas to everyone. Our long bills would take this tree apart if given the chance, but love ‘em just the same – corellas are so personable.

Evelyn  12/24/2009 7:46 pm

I can relate to Mollie about hearing an intruder talking the house in the middle of the night. I haven’t mistaken my macaw for an intruder but he talks in his sleep and even sings. Sometimes he wakes up and starts talking loudly so I tell him “shh, it’s okay” and he quiets down. It’s the funniest thing!

Merry Christmas to all! Thanks for publishing the poem. I love it!

Josee  12/24/2009 8:50 pm

Susan in NW Montana  12/24/2009 10:10 pm

Very cute and thank you for sharing this. I don’t have a “too” but my Eclectus is my prized possession. She, too, has been known to get into trouble if left unchecked.

Beverly Morlan  12/24/2009 10:40 pm

Very cute and so true. I had to replace my air cond cord this last spring and guess what just descovered that no matter how careful I was to not put anyone close to it this year and my too just got it again the other day and so guess what I am doing next spring again.

Donna Y Johnson  12/24/2009 10:47 pm

Delightful. A wonderfully cheerful piece for Christmas Eve! I have a Rose Breast, and she would have been right in the middle of the mess! Toos are pure delight with a bit of frustration mixed in. My Rosie can tear a hole in something then look at me and say, “I love you.” what are you going to do?

Ann  12/24/2009 10:59 pm

Love the poem! I have a blue and gold macaw, and I could see her doing exactly what was said in the poem. When I fold our socks, she things she has to help too, but instead of putting the socks in the basket, my floor is covered in folded socks that Cookie throws out of the basket. I can’t help but laugh at her. Have a great Christmas and best wishes in the new year.

Charna Kinneberg  12/24/2009 11:05 pm

As a proud owner of 2 toos, I do so relate to the chaos these birds can create and the sweet balm of ‘I love you!’ after the storm. There is nothing like being owned by a Wack-a-do (aka M2). My dear Buddy drinks out of soft drink bottles, tosses various objects around with his beak, dances with abandon, makes tooth picks out of boards. He bounces across the room when put on the floor. He has destroyed my clothes hamper, stolen the wood plugs off my stairs and wrecked countless chairs and heaven only knows what he did with those round things from the toilet. The new leather couch was subject to his tailoring. He and my husband routinely have screaming matches. (husband loses) He is a rescue. He came complete with a foul mouth which ended my pre-teen daughter’s hormonal tantrum (Mommy! Did he just say what I think he said? You bet!). He has destroyed his play gym. We have clamps all over his cage since he is capable of unscrewing virtually everything. But… there is the soft ‘Hugs and Kisses’ and ‘I love you!’. As for Princess – my pre-teen daughter and her are glued together. She’s a U2, also a rescue. After we had her for a week, she informed us her name was Princess! It’s amazing to watch the two of them. I love the poem. Anyone who has been near a cockatoo knows it is all very possible. Happy holidays everyone.

Linda Fisher  12/24/2009 11:46 pm

Angela  12/25/2009 4:31 am

I had a Yellow Headed Amazon for 48 years. His ashes are in the spare room to be buried or strewn with me when my time comes. Need I say more?

I now own a Gold Capped Conure, Rainbow. OMG I am retired and I have broken every animal rule and the baby is oh soooo very spoilt. Sadly I can see the grin as Rainbow schmoozes me through another no, no. The little turd even spends more nights than not sleeping with me in my bed.

I am a 4 year recovering cancer patient. Please don’t tell me I will roll over and crush my little bird. I have given that lots of consideration. Fortunately at the moment Rainbow moves away from me when I begin to dose off. When I wake up during the night he is usually at least an arm’s length away from me. I also own a budgie I inherited from another cancer patient as well as my own pussy cat, Samantha, who is now 12 years old.

Poor Sammy cat was so relieved to have me to herself when Jackie died, and then within one year I acquired not one, but two birds. She now just rolls her eyes and ignores them all even though she used to go out of her way to attack or harass my Amazon, Jackie.

When I am in bed I have Rainbow snuggled beside my legs and Sam snuggled on top of me, kind of watching the movements under the blanket from Rainbow. We all seem to get along just fine. Kind of the ‘agree to disagree syndrome’.

Ok, so Rainbow is 1 3/4 years old. He is controlling me even though I try to pretend I am in control. But I have to admit that he “melts everyones shorts” regardless of age and is extremely well behaved with company. He gives kisses, and of course they are french kisses along with a bit of flossing of the teeth. My biggest complaint is his screaming if he isn’t with me. He seems to believe his place in life is on my shoulder.

OK, that is enough of ‘our’ background’. Suffice it to say that I truly giggled at your poem. It may be about a cockatoo, however, a bird is a bird, and if it has intelligence, well then, Merry Christmas, and you better have a sense of humour. They are so tiny and hmph, yes those litte creatured do rule, lol.

Thanks for sharing.

Marlene G.  12/25/2009 10:55 am

That was so cute I’m sending it to friends without birds. But I’m sure you know, you don’t have to have a Too to encounter destruction. I have a “Love Bird” and Cricket manages to do her share. If I’m not careful, and even when I am, she manages to leave her chew mark: on paperback books – imagine when you have to return them to the person who lent them to you; on the wallpaper, on the furniture (before I realized how much supervision is needed when she is out), and of course she has to help me read the newspaper in the morning – hopefully I can read the article before it’s gone. I give her a section but what I’m reading is better. There’s more but that’s just part of it, I also get laughs, and so do my friends when I tell them what she does. Sometimes she acts almost like a dog and follows me around and has to know what I’m doing when I’m home. And when she sits with me when I watch TV and dozes off, it is very comforting. Gotta love ‘em.

HAHAHA I loved it, I have an Umbrella cockatoo named Gooberd and he goes nuts if given the chance with any paper products so naturally Christmas morning was a ball for, this reminded me of that. Thanks for bringing this ray of sun into our morning.

Chris  12/25/2009 7:57 pm

Thank You for sharing that wonderful story. I’m a private bird rescue/sanctuary and although I don’t
have Goffins, I do have 2 umbrellas. They are definitely mischievous by themselves, but you add them to the B & G’s, the Amazons and the Conures and I never have a dull moment, and I wouldn’t
have it any other way. I love all your articles and bird tips, a fan forever. From me and all my feathered friends, to you and all yours Merry Christmas, and wishing you a wonderful 2010.

Maya  12/26/2009 11:17 am

Too cute!!

Ardel Rader  12/26/2009 1:46 pm

Merry Cristmas to you & all of your family & flock.
I too laughed and think the poem is great. I own a 9yr.old moluccan cockatoo,Sebastion, and I am his 3rd home. He came into my life at age 5( I had no idea what I was in for! He was a Christmas present.),cursing up a storm and very destructful (apparently he does not like flowered curtains as he has destoyed them and now solid colored curtains are up)! It took alot of love and patience to turn him around into a loving bird and that was no easy task (we are still working on some thngs)but I wouldn’t give him up for the world !! We play games, call for each other, and he is “my gaurd bird” when someone comes on my front porch or the mailman comes. All though cockatoos have VERY LOUD screams there is usually a reason. His “sweet talking” melts my heart for any wrong doings before it. When I leave the house I make sure he is safe in his “house” and he says “Where are you, come back, come back”. When I return I make a point to greet him and let him know I am back and open the door to his” house”.He is treated as a family member and we are his flock!
I wish all & thier flocks Happy Holidays!

Hi I love this poem, I work at a World Parrot Refuge, and this is a great poem,
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Mim, New South Wales, Australia  12/26/2009 4:17 pm

Loved the poem, however I have my own poem I’d like to share – not cute and funny I’m afraid -

JESSE

Two weeks before Christmas you got sick and you died,
You’d never believe just how much I cried.
It happened so suddenly I wasn’t prepared
And I never even knew just how much I cared.

There’s an empty space now where your cage used to be
And every day I can’t help but see
Your cute little face and your whistles to attract
My attention, and sadly I didn’t always react.

I sit alone now when I watch TV
And I miss not having you on my arm or knee.
I go to my bed and I cannot sleep
As thoughts of you in my mind will creep.

Jesse, I really can’t believe you’re gone
You loved me so much and you tolerated John.
All you ever wanted was to be with me
And each day play on your activity tree.

But I want you to know that though we’re apart
You never will be replaced in my heart.
I hope birds go to heaven and that one day I’ll feel
The pleasure again of seeing my cockatiel.

This is hysterical!! Thank you for sharing! I have an 8 yr old Umbrella Cockatoo who was placed with me. The demon “let” himself out of the cage one memorable night when he got bored and I found the living room shredded: cords, electronics, furniture… I was shaking with rage and wanted to call the vet for an execution-literally and immediately. But the second I got near him, he ducked his head and fell forward so he curled against my chest. Then he tilted his head, looked at me with one eyeball, clucked his tongue and said “good boy??? love you…” Needless to say, he is still alive and bringing color, noise, energy, fun and lots of love into my home. I threaten to pluck him and cook him for dinner on a regular basis but he just chuckles at me and sprawls across my lap for cuddles. I wouldn’t trade him for the world…but I have learned a lot about sturdy locks and how to occupy him!

LutinoRedRumpLover  12/28/2009 10:37 pm

Hey Chet, thank you for this wonderful poem, I can relate with my Lutino Red Rump and my two Budgies. Once I left the Budgies out for a while and next thing I knew They had flown all over the place , torn up papertowel, chewed on paper, pencils, pooped all over the place! They are very energetic, but do not like to come out anymore. My Lutino Red Rump is another story. She wants to come out everyday, and cannot keep herself entertained long enough I know what you mean about mot being able to stay mad at them though, as soon as I see their cute little faces looking up at me knowing they’ve done wrong I just HAVE to forgive them <3 Merry Christmas!!!!

Leslie  12/29/2009 1:18 am

They r nuts I have 5 umbrella’s and 2 molucans. I don’t know how the one enven gets out with the chains and locks on.

Marlene  12/29/2009 3:33 am

I can relate to the mess the Goffins made. I am fortunate, my African grey warns me when he is going to be naughty. He says: “help, help. Tokkelos gaan stout wees” which means, help, help Tokkelos is going to be naughty. If he does not get attention immediately, he makes a mess or makes a hell of a noise. And then he tell you: “Tokkelos loves you very, very, very much.” And then, you give him a kiss and cleans up the mess.

Katz  12/29/2009 10:32 am

This poem is my life. Our farm is “All Creatures Welcome”. Our parrots,(we have 3) are always doing fun and mischievious things. Are chickens, and geese are always pecking at the door to come in. The Goats lay by the door waiting to come in an lay on the couch. Kids let them in an found them relaxing and watching tv. Mini Donkeys My Jack, will lay on me it I let him. Horses they all are in the middle of everything when working out side. Dogs Want to ride on all the farm equipment. Cats (to many to count) Follow us to and from. Becuase we have a big red barn we get alot of unwanted felines. We take in stride and give them a home till they die of old age. We rescue abandoned or unwanted animals. This poem, is a nice reminder of all we have surrounded ourselves with. We have more love and loyality from our animals in one day then most people get in a life time. I’m so glad they are with us. Thank You for shareing this poem!

Sumatee  12/29/2009 11:58 am

Thanks for the poem Chet Womach and Family. It is very amusing considering that I also experience a similar thing with one of my birds pulling the hook of her cage and letting the others out when I am not looking. She appears to be very scheming but she is very lovable. She imitates my laugh.
All the best for the new year.

Sumatee
