When Parrots Are For Sale
| The state of the pet industry can be sad sometimes... especially when it comes to the unethical moving of too many parrots to unsuspecting buyers willing to buy the next cutest little parrot they see. Parrot buyers are giving less and less thought as to what it really means to bring home a baby parrot, and pet store owners aren't helping the problem. Just go into any pet store, play dumb and act like you're interested in purchasing a bird, and you'll find they're very happy to sell you one, but fall VERY short of actually preparing you for what it takes to raise a happy, healthy baby parrot. You can find it here, it's called "When Parrots Are For Sale", and gives you 3 quick tips to help spot a pet shop that you shouldn't let sell you their birds. |

I don't know if you've ever been to 'flea markets' in Florida but they nearly always sell live animals, puppies, kittens and often birds. I understand there are regulations that are supposed to be followed, but one look at most of the birds at flea markets will tell you a sad different story.

phoenixmom says another red flag is if the cages are full of crusted s**t and none of the toys or perches are cleaned

This my first post to you. I love getting you e-mails and look forward to each of. I am thirilled that you are doing a studt about the pet shops. I bough a Large parrot form a shop that had PDD. I spent $2000.00 trying save him only to bury him under a palm tree. I miss him very much. He not only left me with memories but the pet shop I later found out had him on consignment and before he passed he passed PDD to my other two Cockatoos. I have lost one of them since and I have one left that is fighting for her life. This is a horid disease. It is like having a bird with AIDS. She gets sick a lot and needs to see the vet all the time. I miss her loud screams in the evening. Now she makes very little noise. The Cockatoo from the shop looked healthy and ate fine for several months, then became very ill. My daughter worked at a pet store chain for a short time and shared some of the going on's of the store. I was in shock! They do not allways buy from reputable dealers and the new owner can get stuck not being able to care for a sick bird. Of course that means they die or get passed on to another unsuspecting bird lover,,,very sad indeed.
