Operation Crappy Pet Shops -- Mission UPDATE

Dear Secret Agents,

On Monday I sent you an email errr... encrypted spy
message, which explained one of the ways I planned
to use the footage I got sneaking into pet shops
and catching their abusive behavior towards parrots
on camera.

And just to refresh your memory, my 1st goal is to
raise $10,000 for a parrot rescue organization. To
help take care of the unfortunate birds who've
already been abused.

Stuff like feeding them, medications, surgeries etc.

But I've got an even bigger goal to this whole
undercover spy operation :-) And it's time to tell
you about it:

What I've done is take all the 'Spy Footage' we got
from sneaking into pet shops and compiled it into
13 thought provoking lessons.

These lessons show you the 'tough to spot' warning
signs that 99% of people don't catch, when buying
their parrot.

Heck... I've fallen for half of them myself in the
past, and I've paid the consequences with painfully
high Vet bills, and having to literally inject my
parrots with drugs to fight off the diseases and
infections they got at their pet stores.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg!

Most pet shops look just fine on the surface. But
it's the 'hard to spot' stuff that they hide from
you that can get you into trouble.

What you really need is someone to take you by the
hand, walk you through bad pet shops, and point
out all the small little things a seemingly great
pet shop is actually doing WRONG! And why you
shouldn't dare buy a bird from them.

That way you can make sure you don't get suckered
into buying a bird that has problems like:

--> Already a prolific screamer when he doesn't
get the attention he wants. But you won't
know till you bring the bird home.

--> Owning a bird who's destined to be a feather
plucker -- 'cause the pet shop skipped one
essential step in raising the baby parrot

--> Getting stuck with a baby bird who's contracted
a deadly disease or infection.

and many other problems much worse than these...

So I just wanted to let you know that this footage
is being assembled by our intelligence team... the guys
who burn our DVD's ;-) ... and will be ready for
you to process next Friday, November 17th.

Fitting isn't it? Since that's the day the New
James Bond movie's coming out -- I wonder if that was
an accident ;-)

But seriously... even though I'm having a little fun
with this undercover 'Spy Mission' I can assure you
that the problem is real, bird are really being
abused, and new, unsuspecting parrot owners are
paying the consequences.

Help me solve this problem next Friday by helping
me get this information into as many parrot owners
hand's as possible.

After all, my goal is to use this footage to help
me raise over $10,000 for parrot rescue organizations
in desperate need of more funds.

It's a cause worth fighting for, and I hope you'll
join me in this fight next Friday the 17th of November.

Talk to you soon Agents,

Agent 'C' Out...

P.S. Just in case you're reading this message, and
are thinking about buying a parrot as the next
addition to your family... I strongly recommend you
wait until November 17th, to make sure you're buying
from a top class parrot breeder. The 'intel' I have
could save you a LOT of agony.

P.P.S. If you are one of my 'under cover' agents whos
attempts to bring you these mission updates
have failed to reach, you can get caught up to speed on
my blog: http://www.birdtricks.com/updates

  • You know, pet stores can be preety poor.
But have you even seen what's down here in Florida?? We have flea markets left and right here with loads of crappy breeders who smoke around thier birds, feed the birds seed, house them next to snakes and reptiles and the cages are HORRIBLY filthy!

We need legislative action to make sure everyone that breeds has to be licenced, registerd and monitored!
Florida is a horribly sad place for parrots, even with the warm sunshine....

  • yes.. even here in the middle east , Dubai, (U.A.E) there are more crappy pet shops than i thought. They even keep peacocks in a small cage! It's quite surprising to see such shops in such a highly developed country like the U.A.E.

the birds are fed only with sun flower seeds and parakeets are kept upto 20 in cage!

there is also a major stinkin bird selling market in sharjah and that's the place where i bought my pet parrots from. But thank God that they didn't show any symptoms.

even though my pet birds have esaped, :D i still love animals.
Authorities are not taking any action here... that's the worst part.

    agent A out... ;)

  • I kind of agree and disagree with what you are doing Chet. My wife and I just opened a Bird only shop in Altamonte Springs FL, mainly because there are not enough clean bird shops around. We of course love our birds and take care of them like they were our children. We also have a breeding facility so most of the babies are ours but we do buy from a few select breeders locally. I would welcome you to our shop and I would like to see your ideas on what makes a Bird Shop better, I agree with an earlier post I read that says "Why don't you put together and educational package for the Pet shops that don't know what they are doing" For most of you who don't know the majority of Bird only shops do not make a great deal of money, if it wasn't for my other job we couldn't afford to open and maintain the level of cleaning that we do. I welcome a visit chet and you don't have to hide your camera, bring the big one at any time. • I'm not sure why you disagree with me. It sounds like you're doing the perfect thing. You've opened up a good pet parrot shop... that's great.

I hope people aren't misunderstanding what I'm doing. I'm not trying to put good shops out of business, in fact the video footage that I'll be releasing will help great pet shops. It shows people what to look for in good pet shops so they don't buy from the bad ones.

And from my experience, and I know some of my readers would disagree, there are way more BAD, or at least marginal pet shops than there are GREAT ones. And I honestly believe people should only buy from pet shops that take great care of their birds.

So if that's what you're doing -- creating a great pet parrot shop, then this footage will help people realize you are a great pet shop, and not like the others.

There are just so many little subtle things that new parrot owners don't know to look for, that really cause undo stress on themselves and the birds they bring home.

And if I'm ever in your area, then I'll drop by with the camera, and give people a look at what a good store looks like :-)

Cheers man, were' both shooting for the same goal.

  • I know understand much better what your objectives are, and as your readers said above this message in Florida there are alot of really disgusting pet shops. Please do stop by if your ever in the LAND that MOUSE built and we would love to carry some of your video's for trainning if you ever get around time to publish them through a Bird shop. Good luck and hope you at least get a few bad shops put away. Dean Abernathy "The Parrot Place Inc. " (Owner)

  • I'm so sorry for you & your wifes loss. It makes me very sad to hear about little Ricky. My thoughts are with you. & I will certainly spend some extra time with my my birds today!

    By Cathy, at 10:41 AM

  • Thank's cathy.

Many people reading this might not realize what happened, as I haven't posted it on this blog, instead just sent out an email to my list of subscribers. But to update any new person reading these comments sections... Ricky, my parrtlet past away today.

So thank you Cathy for taking the time out to say a few kind words, and hopefully my bit of sadness can inspire a few extra folks to spend some extra time growing their bond with their parrots.

    Thank You Again,

    Chet

  • Hi Chet. I have been working at a pet store where I live and just wanted to let you know that what you are uncovering is true. Pet store owners do not take the time to know what each bird must be feed to keep it healthy. I think that you should also have them look into places that sell bird food. Almost all parrot foods that I have seen coming into the store have nothing but seeds in them. On the bag they claim to be good for your bird. So maybe in your search you should be talking to someone who can get the people making the bird food to stop making seed based diets for birds. I myself own a citron cockatoo and could never feed her anything like that after I had done research and found that it is no good. Plus the vet says she is the healthiest parrot she has seen in her whole life as a vet.

  • Hiya Chet,
    This is "secret agent" michelle.
I have just became a 'birdie mom' in april this year. I have a congo african grey named " Kenya". She is sooo much fun and I have learned alot this year. She keeps us entertained!! She has learned about 40 words so far and she just turned 2yrs old in august. I bought her from a friend that did not have the time that Kenya needed. SHe is spoiled rotten now! I also have 3 dogs and a 16 yr old cat. They all get along. Kenya says " where doggies go?" and "here doggies" , and "doggies go poop'. Its soooo cute. She makes a 'farting' sound and says UH OH.. Kenya Farted'. or asks 'who farted'. I have been reading about the pet shops that are mistreating or neglecting their birds. I couldnt imagine why anyone would do that. These parrots are so much fun and are easy to take care of. I find it a great experience to take care of Kenya..... I dont see it as a chore. I dont have kids and dont want any......so I have my dogs, cat, and Kenya as my babies. I have found a website www.petfinder.com that has rescue groups for parrots on there. I have used this site to adopt one of my dogs. I hope it can help you find places that will take care of rescued birds from these so called 'pet shops'. I was recently in Florida (I am from Illinois) and we went to a flea market in Daytona. They had about 8-10 parrots for sale. They were all together in a open area with plexi glass around it. The birds didnt look very happy or social. Maybe someone can check this place out as well.
Thank you for all your help you have given me on raising Kenya and the help you are doing with saving these babies!!!!

  • Hi,
Does anyone have any information regarding pet services in Sharjah and Dubai (specifically for dogs). We will be moving to UAE in a few months and would appreciate any referrals for pet care etc.

    Regards, Trish
