'Top Secret' Mission UPDATE -- Phase II

Attention Secret Agents,

Over the last 7 days my brother and I have been
collecting 'intel' from bad pet stores that sell
parrots.

The first phase of our mission was a success, as
we now have TONS of intel that exposes the bad
practices of these stores.

So armed with this 'intel' it is now time to
commence Phase II of our operation. Phase II is
of the utmost importance. And will be the
difference between catching a few pet shops, and
shutting down their whole 'EVIL' empire.

What you're about to see is 'Top Secret' and for
your eyes only ;-)

=============================
TOP SECRET MISSION OBJECTIVES
OPERATION "CRAPPY PET SHOPS"
=============================

Objective #1 -- Raise FUNDS to Win this fight!

Ever since I exposed the fact that I would be
attempting this mission, I've been receiving
an overwhelming amount of support for what I'm
doing.

Hundreds of agents (my customers) have either
emailed me, or posted their story of how their
own parrots were raised and sold by TERRIBLE pet
shops all around the world on my blog.

Some of these people have written me enraged that
I have not already handed over my footage to the
authorities who could shut these people down. And
I applaud those people for their passion, and
commitment to these issues.

And I want to let these people know that I will
hand over all footage I have, of truly TERRIBLE
pet store situations that I've caught on tape.

However I have something bigger and better planned...

It would be a HUGE mistake for you, or any of my
other 90,089 subscribers, to think that handing
over the footage I have would make a dent in
solving the problems of pet store abuse.

Sure I'd shut down a few pet stores, but dozens or
even hundreds more would pop up somewhere else.

This type of thinking, while noble, would be like me
thinking I'm going to cure the world of bugs by
driving down the freeway and splattering a few of
their guts on my windshield. I'd kill a few, but
I could never get them all.

Plus it brings up an entirely different issue...

... what about the pet shops who aren't bad enough
to shut down, but still sell lots of birds.

Here's an example:

We walked into a pet shop that to the unsuspecting
eye was fine. There were toys in the cages, the
cages were big, and none of the birds looked abused.

But if you looked closer, the only thing they fed
their birds were sunflower seeds!

If you didn't know, this one terrible mistake of
a bad diet, will nearly ALWAYS cut a parrots life
span in half.

These people are killing parrots too... they're just
doing it over the course of 5, 10 or 20 years. It's
just that the parrots will now die from fatty liver
disease, or kidney problems instead of physical abuse.

This store did a GREAT job with everything else,
but because seeds are cheaper than fresh foods,
produce and pellets, they chose to feed only seeds.

I can promise you, no amount of lobbying is going to
shut this store down. It's just not going to happen.

And that's why my brother and I wanted to do something
more than just shut down a few pet shops. So instead
of just catching a bunch of bad stuff on tape, we
spent dozens of hours interviewing some great pet
shops... because we knew we needed to create tools
to teach people what to look for in a good pet shop,
and not just blaspheme a few of them.

I think you'll agree that makes a lot more sense.

So with your help, I'm going to try to fight this
problem on two fronts.

I'll tell you about the first front today, and get
you more details on the second front in a couple
days. Both fronts are important, but I don't want
to bore you with a 82 page email covering all the
details ALL in one email.

So here's just ONE of the main things I'm wanting
to accomplish with this mission.

Scratch that... one of the things I WILL accomplish
with this mission!

Front #1 --> Raise FUNDS To Help Already Abused Birds

I don't have the statistics in front of me, but
thousands and thousands of parrots are bought on
impulse every year, and then abandoned when people
realize they actually require effort. Go figure

This happens because bad pet shops don't teach
people how to raise a happy, well adjusted parrot,
and it results in thousands of them being abandoned.

People will literally leave them on their back
porch when they move away, and not tell anyone...
slowly letting the parrot just starve to death
if it's not found by neighbors.

Luckily, there are some wonderful organizations
that rescue parrots in these terrible situations.

Many birds require immediate medical attention
including surgery’s, and other forms of treatment.

But as you can imagine, these types of treatment
aren't free, plus once the bird's lives are saved,
it's not exactly free to feed a parrot. Not to
mention make sure it has toys, a nice cage etc.

And that's where I come in!

I've got 90,000+ subscribers to my newsletter,
and I'm betting at least a few of them want to
help donate to this cause.

Am I right :-)

But since I'm swamped with all the details of our
mission, I'd like to ask for your input on some
of the better rescue organizations out there.

I've personally not dealt with any as of yet,
and I'd like to get your feedback on them.

So I've just posted on my blog about this whole
issue, and I'd like you to go and leave me some
feedback on two things:

-->Your recommendations for great rescue
organizations.

--> Warnings about which organizations to stay
away from. I want to make DARN sure I don't
raise money for a bad organization.

If you'd like to do that for me I'd sure appreciate
it, and you can post your feedback in the comments
section of my most recent blog post.

I'll be in touch soon agents.

Agent 'C' out...

P.S. Please realize that shutting down a few pet
shops, and raising funds (even a LOT of funds)
is not going to help STOP this problem.

That's why I'm working on a project that should
help teach people how to avoid these pet shops
before buying from them. And that's where I'll
be using the footage I've just gotten.

I'm hoping that the footage will scare people
into ONLY buying from reputable places, and
actually teach them how to find them. I'll
brief you more on that whole topic in a few
days -- I think it will revolutionize the way
parrots are bought!

  • If you are ever in Bristol, VA stay away from Animal Adventures on Lee Hwy. It is the dirtest store I have ever been in. To make a long story short, they have been raided, shut down temporarily and fined. All to no avail. They go back to their nasty habits. I have bought injured birds from them just to save them.

  • www.mickaboo.com is THE BEST rescue. They are located in the northern California area, but help when ever and where ever they can. PLEASE Chet- Check them out. They make ALL potential adopters, foster bird parents, AND volunteers take a bird care class that is very in volved in how to properly care for an avian companion!

Also check out http://www.fosterparrots.com/story.html a WONDERFUL rescue group! PLEASE read LOLA's story. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE- I guarentee there's Lola's out there right now who need our help.

ANYTHING I can do for helping parrot rescue causes for you guys, or an org. Please contact me at moosecline2@yahoo.com I'm so glad you guys are doing this! There's so many "throw away birds" in this world who need our help- their voices can't be heard in cold dark places.

  • My First suggestion is that you DO NOT give any support or acknowledgdment to the PETA organazation. I wont tell you my personal opinion of the group just in case there are children reading this, but I will say they are not what they seem.
Instead of shutting down any one unless they just have no concern for the animal be it parrot or cat or dog. Why not try education. Develope a program designed specifically for pet stores and offer it to the stores for a fair price (one that a pet store employee could afford). I worked in a "fish store" that had a rep come and do a seminar on saltwater fish. It was free for the employees and the general public was charged $10. It was a great sucess and we all learned a lot. Both employees and customers were better equiped to care for the delicate marine fish.
I dont think as a rule people intentionaly mistreat their animals especially if it is for sale. I think they just dont have a clue what a bird needs. As a group, birds have a vast array of different needs. Let's educate the pet business not shut them down. Again most people want to take care of their animal, but dont always do their homework. They want to sell birds but have no knowledge of the commitment of that decision means. What about the little teeny bopper working in the pet store to raise money for a car. They know only what the pet store owner tells them. "feed it every day but becareful cuz it will bite you!"
Chet why not offer some of your information to pet stores on how to tame and train. Maybe someone else can offer something on bird care. Put it together as a package for the stores. Take your show on the road. Offer seminars to the stores. Education is the key to ending abuse and neglect.

  • I disagree immensley with you Jan. I do believe...no...KNOW that people intentionally mistreat birds. Did you go to read Lola's story I posted above?
People get birds and the birds scream/bite/yell/be birds and people lock them in closets, squirt them with water, bangon their cages, cover them up, and sometimes, like Lola even worse. You're right people don't know how to fix the problems and THAT is when the mistreatment comes in.
There are MANY pet stores that need to be out of the bird business. There's simply not enough homes for all the unwanted birds and these stores are trying to make a quick buck by breeding more who will become more unwanted. Just read about some of the homeless bird on the mickaboo site I posted above.
This is an epidemic- not just a problem!
I agree with the PETA factor, they ar starting a drive to make all bird illegal to own as companions. It's a nasty sort of business in which a lot more bird would be homeless due to PETA's actions.
PETA is very misguided in their opinion of companion birds. They would rather see them dead then in our homes.

  • Since the large parrots can live 100 years, they will all need new homes some time during their lives. Unfortunately, unless people have left instructions in their wills, many times family members immediately turn to rescues. In my state anyone can start up a rescue. There are no licenses or oversight. One "rescue" that I know of has 150 birds crammed into 4 small rooms, filthy cages piled on top of cages, dirty/no water, never bathed or let out of their cages, overgrown beaks and nails, etc. You'd never dream of these conditions if you check out their website: www.lazibirds.com.

Because there are no country-wide laws governing animal rescues many of these places are run by hoarders. They start out with good intentions, but eventually get overwhelmed with more animals than they can care for. To help people evaluate whether a rescue is legitimate, I've created a website called www.parrotrescues.com.

There are thousands of parrots that need a new home. Why not try to reduce the breeding by re-homing birds living in rescues? If there were legitimate, willing to adopt birds out, breeding would become less profitable and less attractive.

I'd also like to see some standards or laws governing all rescue facilities.

  • Wow- really great point on the hoarders VS rescues! Mickaboo uses foster homes via volunteers. The volunteers are made to take a class, given a phone interview, a home inspection/interview, and then may be approved for a foster.
Mickaboo HAS to be the best most responsible rescue I have ever seen. They are truely the one in a million for the birds! I can't say enough good things about that rescue!

  • you speak for the minority when you say people are intentionally cruel to birds, if you view the rspca reprtand many aspca centers and view all the statistics you will find numbers of cruelty are actually going down, the rates for winning prosecutions is drastically down, rspca and other places are doing everything in their power to stop the sale of any animal.. their governing body is actually governed by a majority of animal rights campaigners and extremists..,. adverts only tell you statistics that make them look good....

their are a lot more pets out their , that are very well looked after by people than their are bieng neglected.... the rspca programme they showed on tv was a bad thing to put on.... in 1 show they euthanised 18 staffordshire bull terriers just for the fact they had no room in their shelter, why didnt they ring elsewhere up and see if they could have adopted some?

they would rather kill all animals than have any live as companions, and yet many of them keep animals...

all my birds are looked after, i am not a hoarder , i enjoy my birds and i do the best i can for them, my birds needs come before my needs but they do not come before my childrens needs...
my birds are better fed than i am ,
fact is the MINORITY of birds and companion animals are neglected, many of this is not done on purpose it is just that some people are ill educated as to the animals needs.....

teach them well and let them lead the way.... if we educate it gets passed on.... we learn , children learn...... their children learn... you may get the odd bone idle person who does not listen or even want to listen but many will and many will change !! their is no need for it to be like this..

i watched a man in huston have his 2 parrots took away from him because he whent to work for 2 days away, he had somebody come in and look after the birds while he was away, but still he had his birds took off him??? why, aspca prosecuted this man just because he had to work away for 2 days ... he had somebody to feed them and water them.... how many times do people get babysitters to watch the kids while they are away,
i bet the statistics are much higher.... how many children are abused or neglected? how many children and people severly in need of medical attention that they can not have or will not be given... seriously ill people who are very ill for months and years before they die.... hundreds of thousands...
a dog / bird or pet gets to keep their dignity and be euthanised....

some shops are bad and do not do all the right things, but if they are educated then at least they are given the chance..... why take them all from them, let them earn the chance to prove people wrong!!
